The Somme 2 - 1918

Tour Over Three Days (One full day and two half days) -

from £429 for two people

Cost Includes your Vehicle, Driver and One Passenger

The   Second   Battle   of   the   Somme,   1918,   was   fought   over   the   same   ground that   had   seen   such   fierce   fighting   just   two   years   before.   During   the   last weeks   of   the   summer,   through   the   fields   of   Picardy,   the   British   Third   and Fourth   Armies   made   considerable   advances   from   Albert   and   Bapaume   in the    north,    south    towards    the    open    valleys    of    the    River    Somme    and Peronne further south. The German Second Army was pushed back on a 50 mile front. While   the   Americans   were   supporting   the   British   in   an   advance   on   Arras, the    British    Third    Army    and    American    Second    Corps    captured    Albert. Bapaume   fell   to   the   New   Zealanders   at   the   end   of   August,   the   Australians crossed    the    River    Somme    on    the    31st    and    then    advanced    towards Peronne   breaking   the   German   line   at   Mont   St   Quentin   and   forcing   them into full retreat. From   Peronne   we   will   head   North   and   West   following   routes   taken   by   the allies   in   1916   and   then   again   in   1918.   The   fields   that   saw   the   British   and French   fighting   side   by   side.   Wide   open   river   valleys,   used   by   Caesar   as he   headed   north   in   58   -   51   BC,   that   were   then   fought   over   by   men   who had   come   from   all   corners   of   the   Commonwealth   and   beyond.   The   same ridges   that   provided   British   GHQ   staff   with   vantage   points   in   1916,   and also   saw   the   fatal   crash   of   Manfred   von   Richtoffen   after   he   had   been   shot by infantry in the fields below. The   canals   and   navigable   river   systems   that   were   of   prime   importance when    supplying    troops    were    augmented    by    the    railways.    Engineers frantically    built,    repaired    and    moved    all    forms    of    rail    stock    to    enable everything   from   munitions   to   the   post   to   get   through.   One   of   these   lines has   been   restored   to   run   on   its   original   rail   beds,   so   our   Tour   will   take   the opportunity   and   have   a   break   from   the   horsepower   of   your   4x4   and   have   a ride along the lines that are now well over 100 years old. Based   in   the   town   of Albert,   with   bars,   restaurants   and   amenities   for   all   this Battlefieldsby4x4   Tour    will    take    you    across    some    of    the    lesser    known battlefields that are cut by the River Somme. On   our   first   evening   together   there   is   the   option   of   a   group   meal,   where you    can    relax    after    your    journey    and    get    to    know    each    other    over    a delicious four course meal at a local restaurant. To   book,   click   on   the   link   for   your   chosen   date.   We   only   require   a   £100 deposit   per   vehicle   or   full   payment   if   the   tour   is   less   than   eight   weeks away.   Eight   weeks   before   the   tour   we   will   send   you   a   balance   request   and invoice.   Once   the   balance   is   paid   we   will   send   you   an   information   pack including meeting places, times, booking references etc
